Anniversaries Are Typically Fun, But Not Today: Roe v Wade.
Today marks one of America’s saddest events: Roe v Wade’s 48th anniversary. In case you don’t know, that was the supreme court case that legalized abortions across the nation, although states still hold the right to put some restrictions.
Some dioceses in America have declared today, January 22, 2021, to be a day of prayer and penance. We pray that all affected by abortion find peace in the arms of our Lord. May His merciful heart shower them with love, and may the Holy Spirit soften everyone’s heart and open the eyes of the people to see the harmfulness of abortions.
I know this is not an easy topic for most, but it is essential to have discussions–talk as in have civil conversations and not yell at each other with words of pain. I think it is safe to say that the people opposing abortion do it from a place of compassion and love. When I say that I’m against abortion, I’m also saying that I’m no one to decide when to take someone’s life: it’s not up to me or any human being.
The innocent must be protected. They are so vulnerable and unable to stand up for themselves. Their lives matter as much as any other human being’s!
Some argue they favor abortion only if it is a result of rape. Now, rape is an awful act against a person that should always be shunned, but even that does not justify a victim’s death. One cannot make an evil act right by doing more evil. It is illogical. Furthermore, the odds of a pregnancy taking place after something as traumatizing as a sexual violation are very low. Instead of opting for death, more pregnancy centers should provide proper help (spiritually, psychologically, and physically) for all victims. Yes, you might’ve been in a situation where you didn’t ask for a baby, but God blessed you with one anyway. Children are lovely, and do not have to be expensive as some might say!
(Please don’t take my word for it and do your own research)
As for those seeking abortions as a way of undoing their irresponsibility, where is the womanhood pride? Shouldn’t you be impressed by how wonderful your body managed to conceive after doing the thing that results in pregnancies? I’ll take this time to congratulate you; your body works the way it is meant to work!
I don’t understand why people get upset after discovering they are pregnant when they used medicine known never to have a 100% guarantee to prevent pregnancy. You mean to say that you knew there is a probability of getting pregnant at a time where you did not wish it but continued to do the thing that results in a baby? What?
To me, that is like saying you don’t want to kill yourself, but you are still going to play Russian roulette every other day. Uhm, okay, I guess I’ll just sit back and cheer on your personal choice to make the dumb decision even though I know that there is a chance that you will experience the one thing that will lead to what you did not want: death. In the case of abortion, it is a little different, though, because not only are you putting your own life at risk but that of an innocent person.
There is so much more that could be said about this, but I’ll go back to the Church’s prayer and penance request for today.
In today’s readings, we read Mark 3:13-19.
Fr. Paul gave a beautiful homily focusing on the following words from the Gospel, “He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles, that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons”
We are to always be first with Jesus before taking action, for Jesus will give us the strength to endure whatever journey we are called to take. So, have faith that God will provide us with the wisdom and armor needed for all battles, including this one of abortion.
I’ll leave you with these words from responsorial psalm 85 of today, “Kindness and Truth shall meet.”
