A Friendship with the Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
In John The Holy Spirit is the prominent helper Jesus promised would lead us through life. Do you see how great our God is? He loves us to a level we cannot comprehend. Like ad lover would, each person of the trinity indulges himself in our lives. Our Heavenly Father created us out of love to love. Jesus Christ, our Savior, reunites us with God through His suffering and death. The Holy Spirit guides us toward the path of God! Wow.
You are Lovable
When we welcome the Holy Spirit, we allow him to do God’s will. You see, God will NEVER force himself on our lives. He respects our free will and will always give us the option to accept or refuse His help.
Accepting His love and friendship means letting Him dwell in your heart. There He will make His home and rest upon you. He will take over and transform every corner into something unimaginable. Every wall will be cemented with God’s strength. Every crevice will be adorned with His love. Not a single hallway will be left without His presence.
Let’s read Luke 1: 26-38, where the Holy Spirit dwells in the Virgin Mary.
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Luke 1: 26-38
What a tremendous joy she must have felt! Sure, we won’t have the honor to host the Holy Spirit the same way she did biologically, but as Christians, we can have the same experience of being a temple to the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6: 19). This becomes literal when we consume the Eucharist at Mass (check out our post on the Eucharist and the Mass).
Housing the Holy Spirit
Now, the Holy Spirit is a five-star guest. He is far from a burden, and more often than not, he works quietly without you even having to check up on Him. You might blink, and the next thing you know, you are a new and improved person. That is how much He loves you. You say a little yes, and He showers you with big blessings.
As Catholics, we know seven of these blessings or gifts, as follow:
Jesus constantly spoke about our faith showing fruits and sprouting when rooted in God. Well, by allowing the Holy Spirit to be in our mists, we hold fast to the promises of Christ. And one thing is for sure: God always delivers.
These are the twelve fruits that grow in us through the Holy Spirit:
Warning: God will fulfill your request, but sometimes it happens in ways we would least expect. And often times it requires our cross to be heavier, so we make come to value the virtue we ask for. In other words, be careful what you wish for, but know that God always has your best interest for you! The best part is that we can add them to our prayers as we become aware that we lack one or all!
Building Friendships
I’m not sure about you, but my relationship with the Holy Spirit is new. Unfortunately, we don’t hear much about Him as we do about the Father and Jesus, but He is still part of the Godhead. He plays an essential role in our faith; through Him, we can live since He is part of that exchange of love that is God.
It is hard to believe that God would take a personal interest in you, but we cannot understand His love for us. And that is okay. What kind of friend wants a relationship with someone who only thinks about the logicality of the friendship? That takes a lot of energy away from allowing yourself to be authentic and free in the friendship. So, let yourself be loved and transformed by the Holy Spirit!
Every day, we have an invitation to relive Pentecost and our confirmation. This is your invitation to develop stronger friendship with the Holy Spirit. We should not be afraid if we know that God the Holy Spirit is endlessly guiding us toward Heaven. Let Him ignite your being with His love.
Do you accept?
